The Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2024 is set to kick off on July 1 in Pallekele, Sri Lanka, and has already made headlines due to significant changes in the teams and a notable incident involving a foreign national.

On Tuesday, the auction for the fifth edition of the LPL took place, with 420 cricketers registering and five franchises competing for talent. Matheesha Pathirana emerged as the most expensive player in the league’s history, fetching USD 120,000 from Colombo Strikers.

However, the excitement surrounding the auction was overshadowed by the arrest of Tamim Rahman, a foreign national allegedly connected to the Dambulla Aura franchise.

On Wednesday, Sri Lankan police announced that Rahman had been detained by the special investigation unit of the sports ministry for allegedly attempting to fix matches in the upcoming LPL.

Rahman was apprehended by immigration officials at Colombo International Airport due to a travel ban imposed by the court. He was ordered to be remanded until May 31 by the Sri Lankan magistrate's court.

Despite this controversy, the LPL is poised to be a thrilling tournament with participation from 500 local and international players. The league, scheduled from July 1 to 21, promises exciting cricket action and continues to attract significant attention and investment.
