Former Sri Lanka opener Kaushal Silva has been appointed as the head coach of the Hong Kong cricket team ahead of this year’s 2025 Men’s T20 Asia Cup. The dynamic right-handed wicketkeeper-batter, who played the last of his 39 Test matches for Sri Lanka back in November 2018, has previously had coaching stints in Sri Lanka, England as well as in Australia.

However, Kaushal’s upcoming profile will mark his first assignment as the head coach of an international team.

Kaushal Silva Focused On “Instilling Winning Mentality” In HK

Former Sri Lankan cricketer Kaushal Silva is set to join the senior men’s Hong Kong cricket team as its head coach. His appointment comes roughly a month-and-a-half before Hong Kong faces Afghanistan in the opening match of the 2025 T20 Asia Cup.

In a press release, Burji Shroff, the chairperson of Cricket Hong Kong, praised Kaushal and claimed that the former cricketer’s “dedication for nurturing and developing talent” resonated with the board’s future for Hong Kong cricket.

Silva himself expressed his excitement in joining the Hong Kong team, and stated that his focus will be to instill a “strong work ethic” and a “winning mentality” among the players.

Who Is Kaushal Silva?

Kaushal Silva played 39 Tests for Sri Lanka between the years 2011 and 2018. He was part of the Sri Lanka Test team that won the series in England back in mid-2014. He minted 2,099 runs from 74 Test innings at an average of 28.36, notching up three tons and 12 half-centuries in the process.

Hong Kong’s Asia Cup 2025 Schedule

The Hong Kong team is placed in Group B of the 2025 Asia Cup alongside Afghanistan, Bangladesh and heavyweights Sri Lanka. They will face Afghanistan on September 9 in their opening match of the tournament.

Hong Kong will subsequently face Bangladesh and Sri Lanka on September 11 and September 15 respectively in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
