In a bid to reclaim their "mojo" ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024, England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) coach Matthew Mott has hired Manchester City's psychologist, David Young, to help the team cope with pressure.

Young, who has a history of aiding England's World Cup successes, is set to bring his expertise to the squad, aiming to enhance their mental resilience.

Emotional Vulnerability Key to England's Strategy

Mott, reflecting on England's disappointing performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup, emphasized the need for a fresh approach.

"When you've had the kick in the pants as we've had, you can't just go 'business as usual'. You have to redefine how you go as a team," he stated.

With Young’s help, the team plans to adopt a more open and supportive environment.

"As a group, we've made a commitment to be a bit more open in and around our training sessions, to help each other out a bit more," Mott added.

Jos Buttler played a crucial role in bringing Young back, having previously credited him for his performance in the 2019 World Cup final. Buttler will also lead the team in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024.

Young, who rejoined the squad in Leeds for their series against Pakistan, will continue to work with them through the initial stages of the T20 World Cup 2024, with Manchester City’s approval.

Mott also noted that the team is learning from past mistakes, aiming to avoid the pitfalls that led to their early exit in the 2023 ODI World Cup. He highlighted the importance of adapting and playing a more dynamic brand of cricket, inspired by the Royal Challengers Bengaluru's recent success in the IPL.
