The iconic Eden Gardens Stadium in Kolkata is set to undergo massive renovations to bid for the hosting rights of the 2026 T20 World Cup final. The tournament is slated to be co-hosted by continental neighbors India and Sri Lanka between February and March 2026.

As per the latest reports, the work will commence following the conclusion of next year’s Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season.

Eden Gardens likely to undergo renovation

Eden Gardens, one of the world’s largest cricket stadiums as per seating capacity, will reportedly be renovated with improved facilities in a bid to host the final of the 2026 T20 World Cup. As reported by News18, the work at the iconic venue will commence after the IPL 2024 season.

The Eden Gardens recently hosted five fixtures of the 2023 World Cup, including hosts India’s high-octane clash against South Africa back in November. The occasion was graced by a capacity turnout, where nearly 70,000 spectators enjoyed Virat Kohli’s record-levelling ODI century and India’s emphatic 243-run win over the Proteas.

The final of the tournament was hosted by the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on November 19. The venue has also been a host to the final of the last two IPL editions, thus pipping out Eden Gardens and Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium to become one of the most high-profile cricketing arenas in the country.

Eden Gardens, as of now, is bracing itself to host its share of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) fixtures in next year’s IPL 2024 season.
