Australia secured a tense three-wicket win over South Africa in a hard-fought World Cup 2023 semifinal at the Eden Gardens. Thousands of fans flocked to the iconic venue in Kolkata, as the two white-ball titans tussled over bragging rights for a spot at the finals against India.

Notably, one particular young fan was so overjoyed by the proceedings, that he channeled his inner Sourav Ganguly by swinging his t-shirt at the stands.

Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly, who hails from Kolkata, famously waved his national jersey at Lord’s balcony after the ‘Men in Blue’ trumped over England in the 2002 NatWest series final. While his iconic celebration went on to become one of the lasting memories among Indian cricket enthusiasts, a similar passion was put to display by a young fan at the Eden Gardens stands during Australia’s World Cup 2023 semifinal against South Africa.

The Indian fan, celebrating Australia’s wicket, waved his t-shirt in a similar manner, and even evoked on-air commentators to compare his joyous deed with that of Sourav Ganguly’s back in 2002.

Australia, meanwhile, prevailed in a tense thriller by three wickets, with captain Pat Cummins and tailender Mitchell Starc scoring off the remaining 20 runs towards the closing stages of the contest.

They will now face World Cup 2023 hosts India in the final, set to be played on November 19. The much-awaited contest will be staged by the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
