In what could work as a sharp move from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), out-of-favour Indian wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik has joined the England Lions squad for their upcoming red-ball tour to India.

Karthik has been named a batting consultant and will be part of the Lions' coaching staff for the first nine days of their tour, which will consist of three four-day matches against India A between January 12 and February 4.

Karthik will come in as cover for regular batting consultant and former England legend Ian Bell, who is currently away on a BBL assignment with Melbourne Renegades. The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) player will work under head coach Neil Killen, where former England spinner Graeme Swann is a mentor.

England Men's Performance Director, and current RCB director of cricket, Mo Bobat sounded upbeat about Karthik imparting his knowledge to England youngsters.

It's fantastic to have Dinesh Karthik - Mo Bobat

"It's great to have such a strong coaching group supporting our players for what should be an exciting challenge versus India A. And it's fantastic to have Dinesh Karthik with us for a part of our prep period and leading into the first Test. I'm sure the lads will love spending time with him and benefiting from his experience of what it takes to be successful at Test level in India."

All matches will be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The Lions, led by Josh Bohannon, consist of several Test players like Keaton Jennings, Matt Potts, and Ollie Robinson.
