Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has decided to honour former Indian leg spinner Narendra Hirwani by naming a world-class cricket stadium in his memory in rural Gorakhpur.

As a government spokesperson informed, the decision to inaugurate a stadium was to boost sports infrastructure in the eastern part of UP and to bestow a great honour upon one of the greatest leg-spinners of all time, Hirwani.

“The stadium will not only benefit Gorakhpur, but also the sports talent of Purvanchal, Bihar and neighbouring country Nepal. Through better training, cricket players will bring fame to Purvanchal at the national and international levels. 

"Also, the stadium will lead to a boom in sports business and the national and international level matches played here will boost the sports tourism and hospitality sector,” he said.

Moreover, in a strategic move, he recently also felicitated the T20 World Cup-winning spinner Kuldeep Yadav.

"The development of sports grounds, open gyms in villages and in villages and Ganga grounds in riverside villages aims to promote sports at the grassroots level. The state govt is is also preparing to introduce a new sports policy for the next five years,” the official added.

He aims to widen the prospects of sports in the state by doing this. Moreover, UP is also setting up a sports university named Major Dhyan Chand to honour and promote sports in the state.
