New Zealand opener Devon Conway and experimental number three Rachin Ravindra shattered records and England bowlers with their colossal partnership in Ahmedabad. Turning up for their country in their opening match of the 2023 World Cup against the defending champions, the two cricketers unleashed a barrage of boundaries from the outset in their colossal run-chase.
Conway, Ravindra claim this World Cup record for New Zealand
Rachin Ravindra was tasked by the New Zealand team management to bat at number three early in the innings, following the dismissal of opener Will Young for a first-ball duck. Thereafter, Ravindra and Devon Conway formed a counterattacking third-wicket stand to push England towards the backfoot.
The two cricketers unleashed a barrage of boundaries on English bowlers all across the Narendra Modi Stadium, and placed New Zealand in a comfortable position in the game while doing so. Notably, Ravindra and Devon Conway also managed to topple a 27-year-old World Cup partnership record for their country, previously held by Chris Harris and Lee Germon.
Back at the 1996 World Cup, Harris and Germon shared a 168-run stand to register the highest-ever partnership for New Zealand at the grand stage for any wicket. Conway and Ravindra surpassed the record stand with ease, even though the latter of the two cricketers was not previously accustomed with top-order batting for New Zealand in his international career.
As it turned out, Conway even charted up a century, the fifth for his ODI profile. Ravindra, on the other hand, also reached his maiden ODI hundred as New Zealand inch closer to the target.
