In moving news, former England batter Graham Thorpe died at the age of 55 years on Monday morning (August 5). The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced the demise of the former prolific batter in a press release.

Born in 1969, the Surrey-born player had played 100 Test matches and 82 ODIs for England before retiring from international sport in 2005 after debuting in 1993. The left-handed batter had scored close to 9000 runs in his illustrious career, compiling 16 Test centuries.

"It is with great sadness that the ECB shares the news that Graham Thorpe, MBE, has passed away. There seem to be no appropriate words to describe the deep shock we feel at Graham's death," the ECB said in the press release.

"The cricket world is in mourning today. Our hearts go out to his wife Amanda, his children, father Geoff, and all of his family and friends during this unimaginably difficult time. We will always remember Graham for his extraordinary contributions to the sport," the press release added.

The shocking news of Thorpe passing away left the cricketing fraternity shell-shocked. Not just the ECB but also Surrey Cricket County paid tribute to their legend, who scored 21,937 runs for the county in First Class cricket, with 49 centuries to his name and an average of 45.04.

"Graham is one of the great sons of Surrey and there is an overwhelming sadness that he will not walk through the gates of the Oval again. He is a legend of Surrey and brought great pride to the Club wearing both the Three Feathers and the Three Lions. He made outstanding contributions to the Club as a cricketer, and as a man, and he will be so sorely missed," Oli Slipper, the Chair of Surrey Cricket Club said.
