Bengal opener Abishek Porel muscled 170 unbeaten runs from just 130 deliveries against Delhi in the Group E match of the 2024-25 Vijay Hazare Trophy at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. Porel’s raging effort, glittered with 18 scorching boundaries and seven blazing sixes, helped Bengal cut down Delhi’s 272-7 with more than 50 balls to spare.

Remarkably, Porel also plays for the Delhi-based Delhi Capitals franchise in the IPL, and is slated to reprise his role next year for the 2025 edition of the tournament.

Delhi Capitals star Abishek Porel flays Delhi

Young Bengal opener Abishek Porel launched an aggressive all-out assault on Delhi bowlers on Day 1 of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25 season. Mere weeks after getting retained by the Delhi Capitals franchise for the IPL 2025 season next year, Porel smeared 18 boundaries and seven sixes in his thunderous 170-run unbeaten knock to blaze Bengal towards a six-wicket victory in the 42nd over.

Abishek Porel was acquired by the Delhi Capitals franchise back in early 2023 as a replacement for an injured Rishabh Pant. While the prodigious wicketkeeper-batter played just four matches in his maiden season, the cricketer justified his call-up the following year by accumulating 327 runs from just 12 innings for the Capitals.

The 22-year-old notched up two half-centuries in his IPL 2024 stint, and amassed all his runs at an astonishing strike rate of 159.51, even out-striking captain and comeback man Rishabh Pant’s 155.40.

Abishek Porel’s breakthrough season with the bat prompted the Delhi Capitals franchise to retain him for IPL 2025 alongside only three other cricketers, i.e., an all-international roaster of Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav and Tristan Stubbs.

Nonetheless, with a win up their belt, Bengal will now face Tripura in their next Group E match of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25 season on December 26 at the NexGen Cricket Ground in Hyderabad.
