Hobart Hurricanes crashed Perth Scorchers by eight wickets in match number seven of the BBL 2024-25 season at Hobart’s Bellerive Oval. Hurricanes opener Mitchell Owen masterminded the chase to perfection with a heroic ton after Riley Meredith’s opening burst with the ball.

Here’s the timeline of how Hurricanes vs Scorchers panned out at Hobart:

Hurricanes vs Scorchers Highlights: Riley Meredith Ravages Scorchers Top-Order

Hobart Hurricanes quick Riley Meredith got the new ball swinging at the top as the 28-year-old dismissed Scorchers opener Finn Allen in just the second delivery of the match. The speedster also had number three batter Cooper Connolly caught out by Billy Stanlake running backwards from short fine as the Scorchers slipped to 20-2 in three overs.

Keaton Jennings remunerated Scorchers’ early struggles with a 58-run partnership with wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis for the third wicket. The two cricketers struck counterattacking top-order cameos until Jennings (35 off 28) was deceived by a slower one from Waqar Salamkheil at 78-3 around the halfway stage of the innings.

Hurricanes vs Scorchers Highlights: Captain Turner Leads From The Front In Slog Overs

Josh Inglis (49 off 35) missed out on a well-deserved half-century by getting runout to Riley Meredith in the 16th over of the innings.

Nonetheless, captain Ashton Turner led the Scorchers from the front in the slog overs by whacking 39 quick runs from 28 balls with four boundaries. Turner’s death-overs charge, while halted by Meredith (3-27) in the final over, blazed the visitors to a competitive 155-6 by the competition of their innings.

Hurricanes vs Scorchers Highlights: Behrendorff Gets The Early Breakthrough

Defending 156 runs for a win, Perth Scorchers fast bowler Jason Behrendorff got the early breakthrough for his team by knocking out Hurricanes opener Caleb Jewell for a sluggish seven. Thereafter, Jewell’s opening partner Mitchell Owen and number three Shai Hope kept afloat with the asking rate by navigating the Hurricanes to 79-1 after the first 10 overs.

Hurricanes vs Scorchers Highlights: Mitchell Owen Tons Up Scorchers In Heroic Chase

Unbeaten Mitchell Owen broke the shackles in the backend of the innings during his 101-run rescue stand with Shai Hope. Owen launched nine boundaries and five sixes, and even landed a couple of them outside the stadium.

While Shai Hope (38 off 35) made his way back to the dugout courtesy of Jason Behrendorff at 133-2, Owen raged on and brought up his maiden BBL ton to finish off the chase. The cricketer made 101 unbeaten runs from 64 balls to steer the Hurricanes to a remarkable eight-wicket win with four balls to spare.
