Saint Lucia Kings have announced Namibian player David Wiese as their new captain for the 2025 Caribbean Premier League (CPL). He takes over from Faf du Plessis, who led the team to their first CPL title last season.

Faf du Plessis was expected to play again this year. However, he had to pull out for personal reasons and because of a groin injury. He had planned to play in another tournament called The Hundred in England, but he dropped out of that too to have surgery and recover in time for another event later this year (SA20).

Under Faf’s leadership, the Kings won their first CPL title in 2025. He joined the team in 2022 and returned last year to help them become champions.

David Wiese Thanks Saint Lucia Kings For The Support

Now, the responsibility falls to David Wiese, who is excited about the role. In a a press release from Saint Lucia Kings, he thanked the team and fans, he said,

"Thank you to the Saint Lucia Kings and all the fans for your belief and support. It is a huge honour to lead this team. I am absolutely humbled to be named your captain. This season, we will be playing with passion, heart and unity. You will see us give everything for each other and for you. And fans, we need you with us to pack the stadiums, lift the vibe and let's paint Saint Lucia blue. Let's make this a special season."

The 40-year-old all-rounder has been with the team for over four seasons and played a big role in last year’s win. He scored 121 runs and took 13 wickets in the tournament, proving to be a key all-rounder.

Notably, Wiese has a lot of experience, having played 400 T20 matches over the past 17 years. Now, he’s ready to lead the Kings as they try to defend their title.

The defending champions will start their 2025 season on August 17 with an away match against the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons. Their squad also includes big names like Tim David, Tabraiz Shamsi, and Delano Potgieter as part of their overseas signings.
