In a significant development ahead of the 13th edition of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL2025), Guyana Amazon Warriors have signed Australian wicketkeeper-batter Ben McDermott. He replaces New Zealand’s Glenn Phillips, who has been ruled out of the entire tournament due to an injury.

Groin Injury Forces Glenn Phillips to Miss CPL 2025

Guyana Amazon Warriors secured Glenn Phillips during the CPL 2025 draft in June, banking on his explosive batting and handy spin to boost their middle order. However, a groin injury sustained while playing for Washington Freedom in MLC 2025 has ruled him out for several weeks, making him unavailable for the tournament, starting from 14th August.

In Phillips’ absence, the Warriors have brought in Australian wicketkeeper-batter Ben McDermott, a right-hander known for his dynamic stroke play and safe hands behind the stumps. McDermott brings valuable experience from various T20 leagues worldwide, particularly Australia’s Big Bash League where he has been a significant name for the Hobart Hurricanes.

The Kiwi all-rounder was recently ruled out of New Zealand’s T20I Tri-Series and is now also missing the ongoing two-match Test series in Zimbabwe. Despite initially traveling with the national squad, scans confirmed a multi-week recovery period for Phillips, forcing a complete withdrawal from the tour and raising concerns about his short-term availability across formats.

Coming back to Guyana, the addition of McDermott provides the franchise a like-for-like replacement in terms of firepower while bolstering their wicketkeeping options. As CPL 2025 approaches, the team will be counting on McDermott to make an immediate impact and help the team push one step further after finishing as runners-up last season.
