In a significant development, Daryl Mitchell has become the new No. 1 ODI batter, ending Rohit Sharma’s short reign at the top position. Mitchell’s rise comes after his match-winning century against the West Indies. It is also important to that he becomes the first New Zealander in 46 years to lead the ODI batting rankings. The last Kiwi to achieve the feat was Glenn Turner.
Mitchell becomes first NZ player since 1979 to reach No. 1
The 34-year-old all-rounder played a brilliant knock of 119 off 118 deliveries in the series opener against the West Indies. This superb performance allowed Daryl Mitchell to surpass Afghanistan’s Ibrahim Zadran and move to number one spot ahead of Rohit Sharma (781 points). Mitchell now holds the No. 1 ODI batting spot for the first time in his career with 782 points.
Other major changes in ICC rankings
Taking a look at the other changes, Babar Azam rose one spot to No. 6 (ODI rankings) after an unbeaten 102 against Sri Lanka. Mohammad Rizwan climbed to 22nd, and Fakhar Zaman jumped to 26th, both gaining five places.
In bowling, Pakistan leg-spinner Abrar Ahmed moved up 11 spots to 9th following a three-wicket haul. Pakistan fast bowler Haris Rauf also moved to 23rd position.
West Indies bowlers Jayden Seales moved to 20th, and Roston Chase also gained. In the ICC Men’s Test Rankings, South Africa captain Temba Bavuma reached 5th position. Simon Harmer, who took eight wickets in two innings, jumped 20 places to 24th.
India players also saw significant rise in the longest format with Kuldeep Yadav attaining 13th position, Ravindra Jadeja moving four spots to 15th position. Shubman Gill, despite being injured, climbed two places to 11th.
Bangladesh players Nazmul Hossain Shanto and Mahmudul Hasan Joy jumped to 34th and 74th after centuries in their innings win over Ireland.
