Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh is set to make his return to domestic cricket for Western Australia in the ongoing 2025-26 Sheffield Shield season. The cricketer will likely play a match for his domestic team earlier in December with an aim of making his Test return to the national side at some point in the 2025-26 Ashes series.
Marsh, aged 34, last played red-ball cricket back in December last year during Australia’s five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2025 home Test series against India. He was dropped from Australia’s subsequent tours of Sri Lanka and West Indies owing to his below par returns with both bat and ball.
Mitchell Marsh in contention for an Ashes recall
Mitchell Marsh is in line to play Western Australia’s round six match of the 2025-26 Sheffield Shield season against Victoria at the Melbourne Cricket Ground between December 4 and December 7 next month. As per an ESPNCricinfo report, the seasoned all-rounder will also likely play Western Australia’s 50-overs match against the same team on December 2 at the Junction Oval.
Mitchell Marsh has not played a first-class match for any side since he was dropped from the Australian team following their ‘Boxing Day’ Test against India last year. The all-rounder went wicketless in the match, and managed to accrue just four runs across both innings.
While Marsh has previously long downplayed his prospects of making a Test return, Australia’s chairman of selectors George Bailey confirmed that the all-rounder’s red-ball career for his nation is far from over.
Coach Andrew McDonald had also recently stated that the Australian selectors will be “comfortable” in picking Mitchell Marsh in the Ashes team if they needed him. Marsh, however, is not selected in the Australian team for the series-opener at the Perth Stadium between November 21 and November 25.
As his Shield return nears, Mitchell Marsh now faces a defining stretch that could determine whether his red-ball journey, and Ashes ambitions, find a fresh chapter in 2025-26.
