Glenn Maxwell was once the most electrifying and in-demand player in the Indian Premier League (IPL), but he now finds himself at a crossroads. The Punjab Kings (PBKS) made a bold decision ahead of the 2026 season by releasing the Australian all-rounder from their squad. Maxwell’s journey with PBKS, filled with highs and lows, now raises the question: Is this the end of Glenn Maxwell in the IPL?

Maxwell first became a household name in India during the 2014 IPL season. He played 16 matches (IPL 2014) and scored 552 runs at an astonishing strike-rate of 187.75, helping the franchise reach its first IPL final.

Maxwell struggles with consistency in IPL

Eleven years later, PBKS again reached the final in 2025, but Glenn Maxwell’s form was a concern. In six matches, he managed just 48 runs at a strike rate of 97.95.

Punjab Kings' head coach Ricky Ponting explained the reasoning behind the release. It is clear that PBKS' decision to release Maxwell was based on multiple factors: team balance, performance, and future strategy. The franchise spent ₹4.2 crore on Maxwell in 2025, yet he failed to contribute significantly.

"Love Glenn and what he brings to the game. Unfortunately, last year, we weren’t able to get the best out of him. Looking ahead to this season, we didn’t feel he would be part of our starting team, so we decided to release him,” Ponting told Star Sports.

It can be said that for IPL franchises, players consistency is key. Teams want players who can deliver match-winning performances every season rather than inconsistent show. Maxwell, despite being a big name, struggled to meet these demands.

It is important to note that in comparison to IPL, Maxwell’s T20I record remains impressive. He has scored 2,835 runs, including five hundreds and 12 fifties at a strike rate of 155.76.

If we take a look at Maxwell's IPL and T20I record, the contrast highlights a key point: while Maxwell has performed well in Australia’s T20 setup, he has struggled to replicate that success in  the cash-rich league. Moreover, injuries have also affected his consistency and availability, further affecting PBKS franchise appeal.

Is this the end of Maxwell in the IPL?

The fact cannot be denied that Maxwell's talent is undeniable, and unless a franchise is looking for an experienced middle-order hitter or finisher at a lower price, Maxwell may struggle to attract bids in the 2026 auction.

The recent trend in IPL now focuses on reliability and constant performance, and Maxwell’s recent seasons have not shown this.

However, Maxwell’s T20I record shows he still possesses match-winning ability. If a team is willing to take a calculated risk, Maxwell could still be a name in IPL. This season could be a do-or-die opportunity for the Australian star, offering him one last chance to prove that he can be the explosive force he once was in the IPL.

For Maxwell, the challenge now is not just about hitting big shots; it's about convincing IPL franchises that he can deliver when it matters most.
