Former West Indies captain Daren Sammy has been appointed as new limited-overs head coach of the side. Remarkably, the veteran all-rounder led West Indies to two T20 World Cup titles (2012 and 2016) during his playing days.

On the other hand, Andre Coley has been handed over the Test reigns as Cricket West Indies adopts England’s model of having separate coaches for red ball and limited-overs contests.

World Cup winning Sammy to return as team’s coach

On May 12, Cricket West Indies announced new head coaches for their senior men’s teams. Notably, they appointed two separate coaches for limited-overs cricket and Test matches, a template proven largely successful for England since their twin-coach announcement last year.

While legendary captain Daren Sammy will take over West Indies’ ODI and T20I setups, former cricketer-turned-coach Andre Coley will be taking over the command of the Test side.

As per the cricket board, the decision to select the two were made after a transparent interview process.

Sammy, a two-time T20 World Cup-winner, expressed his excitement over his new responsibility towards West Indies cricket. The all-rounder said he is looking forward to the opportunity, and vowed to take coaching with the same approach he did as a player. He said:

“It will be a challenge but one that I’m ready for and excited about. I’m really looking forward to the opportunity, especially looking at the players we have and the impact that I believe I can have in the dressing room. I believe I will bring the same approach as I had as a player: the passion, the desire for success, and my undying love for West Indies cricket.”

His first assignment features a three-match ODI competition against UAE this June. The series serves as a testing ground for West Indies prior to the World Cup Qualifier which will be played in Zimbabwe. Sammy himself knows a thing or two about winning an ICC event in India, considering his courageous leadership won them a T20 World Cup there back in 2016.
