Rajasthan Royals’ Yuzvendra Chahal scalped four Kolkata Knight Riders wickets in match number 56 of IPL 2023 at Eden Gardens. Through his match-winning spell, the leg-spinner bagged his second successive 4-wicket haul, thus shooting up his season’s wickets tally from 13 to 21 in a space of two games.

Ahead of Mohammed Shami and Rashid Khan, both with 19 wickets each, Chahal is fittingly leading the ‘Purple Cap’ race this season.

Notably, the cricketer had much to celebrate aside from his side’s big win over the KKR, considering the 32-year-old also managed to usurp his IPL coach and all-time legend Lasith Malinga for a rare record.

Chahal crosses 20-wicket mark in a season for the fifth time

Yuzvendra Chahal, currently at 21 wickets in IPL 2023, has gone past the 20-wicket mark in an IPL season for the fifth time in his career, and second time in successive years.

The Haryana-based cricketer bagged the ‘Purple Cap’ last year with a career-best season haul of 27 wickets. He had also taken 20-plus wickets in successive seasons in 2015 and 2016, and returned to add another 21 to his stockpile in the 2020 edition of the tournament.

Former Mumbai Indians speedster Lasith Malinga, who is currently the coach of Rajasthan Royals, had achieved the same on four occasions during his playing days. The legendary Sri Lankan claimed 20-plus victims in three successive seasons between 2011 and 2013, winning the ‘Purple Cap’ in 2011 and his maiden IPL title for Mumbai Indians in 2013.

The cricketer delivered another season-winning haul for his franchise in 2015 with 24 wickets.

Apart from Chahal topping his IPL coach for this rare record, the seasoned spinner also surpassed CSK star Dwayne Bravo in becoming the most successful bowler in IPL history. The veteran Indian now has 187 IPL wickets to his name, thus putting him four ahead of Bravo’s all-time collection.
