Danish Kaneria Seeks BCCI And PM Modi's Support To Overturn ECB Ban

Former Pakistan cricketer Danish Kaneria has approached the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) with a plea for assistance.

Kaneria calls on PM Modi and BCCI to intervene in ECB ban case

Kaneria hopes that with their influence, the lifetime ban imposed on him by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in 2012 for his involvement in spot-fixing could be reconsidered.

In an interview with AajTak, Kaneria expressed his desire for the Indian leadership and the BCCI to intervene in his case and help lift the ban that has haunted his career.

“I would like to appeal to Prime Minister Modi and the BCCI to help me remove the ban that was imposed on me by the ECB,” said Kaneria.

A decade ago, the ECB handed a lifetime suspension to the Pakistan spinner after he was found guilty of two counts of spot-fixing. Alongside him, Mervyn Westfield, Kaneria's Essex teammate at the time, was penalized with a five-year ban after admitting a single offence.

The ECB's decision to ban Kaneria came after the board found evidence indicating his role in persuading Westfield to accept money in exchange for deliberately allowing a set number of runs in an over during a match against Durham in 2009. This act was flagged as jeopardizing the integrity of the sport.

Though it took him several years, Kaneria, in 2018, came forward and confessed to his involvement in the scandal, terming it "the biggest mistake of my life". The former cricketer now seeks redemption and hopes the Indian authorities can play a part in his journey back to the cricketing world.
