In a significant development, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have officially denied any foul play during the procedure of signing South Africa's swashbuckling batter Dewald Brevis as a replacement player in IPL 2025. This afternoon, the franchise released a statement, explaining how the signing of the Proteas star was in line with the rules and regulations of the IPL.
CSK Issues Clarification Over Brevis Saga After R Ashwin's Shocking Claims
Dewald Brevis, who initially went unsold in the mega auction, later joined CSK as an injury replacement for left-arm pacer Gurjapneet Singh. He had a base price of INR 75 lakhs; however, the five-time champions secured his services for a significantly higher amount.
Recently, premier spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, in one of his YouTube videos, stated that CSK should've purchased Brevis at his base price, indicating how the franchise exploited the IPL loophole to bag one of the most promising players going around. Ashwin's remarks earned massive backlash for the Super Kings, with fans speculating foul play behind the scenes during the signing.
However, the Super Kings have dismissed the rumours, providing key details of the deal. The five-time champions stated that Brevis was signed at INR 2.2 Crores, which was Gurjapneet Singh's IPL salary.
As the franchise highlighted, the signing of Dewald Brevis was in accordance with clause 6.6 of the IPL player regulations, which states that the signing amount of the replacement player must not be higher than the auction price of the injured player.
"Chennai Super Kings categorically clarifies that all actions taken by the franchise during the signing process of Dewald Brevis as a Replacement Player during TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 were in complete compliance with the rules and regulations of IPL," CSK's official statement read.
"In April, 2025, Dewald Brevis was signed for a league fee of INR 2.2 Cr as a replacement player for the injured Gurjapneet Singh, who was picked up at the IPL 2025 Player Auction held at Abadi AI Johar Arena, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia for a price of INR 2.2 Cr. Dewald Brevis was signed in full accordance with the IPL Player Regulations 2025-27, specifically clause 6.6 under replacement players," it added.
Talking about Brevis, the South African youngster had a stellar season for CSK, amassing 225 runs in six innings at a blistering strike rate of 180. He is in sublime form and will play a pivotal role for the franchise in the upcoming seasons.
