Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra has raised significant questions about potential irregularities in the IPL's player replacement rules, following Ravichandran Ashwin's disclosure regarding Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) acquisition of Dewald Brevis during IPL 2025.

Chopra specifically questioned whether CSK exploited a loophole to pay the South African batter more than the stipulated replacement fee.

CSK signed Brevis for ₹2.20 crore as an injury replacement for seamer Gurjapneet Singh, matching Gurjapneet's auction price. However, Ashwin recently revealed that Brevis had negotiated with multiple franchises for additional money beyond his base price, implying CSK agreed to such terms, though he didn't specify the exact amount paid.

Chopra's Analyses CSK's 'Exploiting' Move

Chopra, on his YouTube channel, dissected the situation, highlighting the core issue while speaking on Brevis' inclusion mid-season.

"He didn't play the first match, but after that, he batted extremely well and took an incredible catch on the boundary. Ashwin has disclosed that he asked for more money. Is there any provision to give him more money than he should have gotten officially? In such a case, can it be said that CSK broke the purse limit to buy Dewald Brevis? Is there a loophole there, which Ashwin has highlighted?" Chopra said.

Further elaborating on the CSK-Brevis deal, Chopra shed light on the standard IPL replacement rule.

"You get your total salary on a pro-rata basis. It cannot be lower than your base price. In Dewald Brevis' case, it couldn't have been lower than ₹75 lakh, and couldn't have been above ₹2.20 crore, the salary of Gurjapneet Singh," Chopra added.

Chopra Points At The Loophole

Given Ashwin's claim that Dewald Brevis sought and received extra payment, Chopra asserted and emphasized the gravity of Ashwin's revelation, suggesting it points to a wider, potentially systemic issue

"Ashwin is saying that players ask for more money, and according to him, the Chennai Super Kings agreed as well. Since Ashwin has said it, I believe Brevis would have asked for more money. In case you have given more than ₹2.20 crore, as it's a plan for next year, if there was a loophole, you have exploited it," Chopra concluded.

Brevis performed well for CSK, scoring 225 runs at a strike rate of 180.00 in six innings, but his acquisition is now under the microscope due to the payment controversy revealed by Ashwin and probed by Chopra.
