Champions Cup Mentors - (Source : @PakistanCricket/X.com)
In a significant development, there are reports that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is still depositing salaries to four former cricketers for their appointment as mentors for the scrapped Champions Cup.
Notably, in 2024, the PCB launched the Champions Cup featuring five teams to unearth talents following a shambolic performance by senior stars in ICC events. For the five teams, the PCB roped in five mentors - Sarfaraz Ahmed, Misbah-ul-Haq, Waqar Younis, Saqlain Mushtaq, and Shoaib Malik.
Salary Drama Hit PCB
These five mentors were hired on a contract worth 5 million PKR, equivalent to 15 lakh rupees monthly. The hefty amount was more than what Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan earned as centrally contracted players.
However, the apex board of Pakistan scrapped the tournament, following which Malik resigned from his post. However, the rest, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Misbah-ul-Haq, Waqar Younis, and Saqlain Mushtaq didn't follow Malik's footsteps and held their post.
Thus, as per the contract, the PCB is bound to pay the mentors their salaries for one year of the contract. Thus. These four mentors will receive 5 million PKR in their accounts for the rest of the year.
PCB Terminates War, Saqlain's Contract
Also, if the PCB terminate their contract, then too the board is bound to pay the former Pakistan stars money as per the contract. Although the board urged the mentors to resign, they refused to receive the money.
According to the report from Cricket Pakistan, the Pakistan Cricket Board has sent termination letters to Saqlain and Waqar Younis and are ready to bear the financial loss, but for the remaining two, they have informed them that the board will reduce their salaries.
