Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Ruturaj Gaikwad is currently seen leading his team in the ongoing IPL 2025. The star player is reportedly set to face a setback in his international career. Gaikwad, despite his impressive leadership skills and stellar performances in the IPL, is unlikely to retain his place in the upcoming BCCI central contract list.
Why Will BCCI Remove Ruturaj Gaikwad From Central Contract?
According to a report by PTI( as quoted by MyKhel), the 28-year-old may miss out on the coveted central contract due to his limited appearances for India in recent times. The BCCI, which is yet to finalise the new list of central contracts for the men’s team, has strict criteria for retention.
Players must fulfill at least one of the following conditions to be eligible: three Tests, eight ODIs, or ten T20Is in a calendar year. Gaikwad, having not met this threshold, appears to be on the verge of being excluded.
It is important to mention that Ruturaj Gaikwad has not played a single ODI match in 2024 and on the other hand he has just played 4 T20I matches against Zimbabwe. In the 4 T20I's he has made 133 runs at an average of 66.50 and strike-rate of 158.33.
The uncertainty surrounding Gaikwad’s inclusion comes at a time when India is witnessing several changes in its central contract structure. However, it is important to note that exceptions can be made at the discretion of the BCCI selection committee, in consultation with the head coach and board secretary.
The announcement of the BCCI’s new central contracts is eagerly awaited, with likely chances that Shreyas Iyer, who was dropped from the list last year, expected to make a return after playing 11 ODIs this season.
