The next edition of the summer Olympics in Los Angeles, USA will see a significant change with Cricket all set to feature in the global tournament. It was first declared by IOC in October 2023, and since then there is a lot of buzz among the cricket fanatics about the implications of this historic move.

While there are pundits who reckoned that it will not make a huge difference to cricket or Olympics as a whole, Ricky Ponting, the former Australian skipper is excited for the event.

Big Positive For Cricket

Ricky Ponting mentioned that inclusion of cricket in Olympics can only be a positive thing for the game and added that he has been in various committees over the last two decades and inclusion of cricket in Olympics was always at the top of the agenda.

“It can only be a positive thing for our game. I've sat on various committees over the last 15 or 20 years, and it's always been on the top of almost every agenda, how do we get the game back into the Olympics? And finally, it's there."

Ponting also added that it is also a chance to break into the grassroot level of cricket in United States and opens up a new plethora of audience for the game which could be a big boost for the long-term future of the game.

“It's only four years away. I think it also gives cricket a chance to break into the grassroots level in the US. But the thing about the Olympic Games, it's not the host nation. It's about the audience that it opens up."

Cricket was last seen in Olympics back in 1900 when only two teams, Great Britain and France competed, and ICC would be hoping that the inclusion of the game this time around, marks a long term association of cricket with Olympics just like other popular games around the world.
