Brandon King’s 89 run knock and a combined effort from the bowlers helped Jamaica Tallawahs beat St Kitts and Nevis Patriots by 47 runs in Match 1 of the Caribbean Premier League 2022 at Warner Park, St Kitts and Nevis.

While chasing the target of 184, the Patriots lost Evin Lewis early in the innings and were 36 for 1 at the end of the powerplay. The asking rate kept rising and the Patriots kept losing wickets in regular intervals.

Sherfane Rutherford gave some hope in the middle but could not take it to the end and departed after scoring 33 runs off 22 balls. The defending champions were limited to 136 for 8 in 20 overs, 47 runs short of the target.

From the Tallawahs’ point of view Mohammad Amir took the big wicket of Evin Lewis in the powerplay and finished with 23 for 1. Imad Wasim and Chris Green were very economical as usual. Nicholas Gordon was the pick of the bowlers, taking three wickets, including the wicket of Rutherford.

Brandon King top scored for the Tallawahs

Earlier in the game, after being asked to bat first, the Tallawahs started the innings slowly, amid some incredible bowling with the new ball from young Duan Jansen. However, Brandon King took the charge and managed to take the score to 48 for no loss at the end of the powerplay.

Kennar Lewis scored 48 off 46 at the other end and added 116 runs with King for the first wicket. King reached his half century in 36 balls and went onto score his second highest CPL score of 89 in 57 balls. At the end Rovman Powell scored a brilliant cameo of 30 runs in just 15 balls and the Tallawahs finished with 183 for 2 on the board at the end of 20 overs.

Jansen was the star with the ball without a wicket but bowled 14 dots in his first three overs in the powerplay.
