In an interesting development, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi confirmed that Lahore’s Gaddafi stadium’s reconstruction work is on pace and has already scaled 50% completion ahead of the Champions Trophy 2025. Pakistan is set to host the ICC event and to meet international standards, several cricket stadiums are being revamped in the country.
Pakistan is hopeful of hosting a full fledged Champions Trophy in 2025 despite resistance from India. Due to severed political ties, the Indian government is unlikely to allow the BCCI to send a team on Pakistan’s soil. However, a decision is yet to be taken as Pakistan continues with his reconstruction projects.
Mohsin Naqvi visits Gaddafi Stadium's renovation site
Shortly after Mohsin Naqvi took over as PCB chairman earlier this year, he ordered reconstruction of major cricket stadiums in the country, including the Gaddafi Stadium of Lahore and National Stadium in Karachi. Naqvi noted that facilities in these venues do not meet international standards and that a rework is the need of the hour.
In a recent visit at the reconstruction site in Lahore, Mohsin Naqvi confirmed that Gaddafi Stadium’s rework is close to 50% completion as floors in the main and office building are being placed. He also met the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) to review the progress.
Naqvi noted that a cricket museum and a souvenir shop will be installed in the main building to increase the appeal. He also instructed the authorities to ensure full completion by the set timeframe, which is before the 2025 Champions Trophy.
PCB promises special visas for Indian fans
In a bid to pacify India, PCB announced that fans from India who wish to attend the Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan, will be prioritised in the visa process. Board chairman Mohsin Naqvi promised a smooth and swift visa experience for Indian nationals and appealed to the government to cooperate. Notably, India is expected to push for a hybrid model as the government is in no mood to allow permission for India to travel to Pakistan due to security concerns.
