On October 31, IPL franchises announced their list of retained and released players ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. Among the major headlines was the release of Shreyas Iyer, the captain who led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to a dominant IPL 2024 title win. After weeks of intense speculation, KKR CEO Venky Mysore revealed the reasons behind this significant decision.

Back in 2022, Shreyas Iyer was selected with the intent to build the team around his leadership and was one of the key member of the team. Talking about his on his importance, Mysore said,

“Shreyas Iyer was the first name in our retention list. However, the retention process isn’t a one-way street. It is not just about the franchise. It is also about the player wanting to be retained, to continue with the franchise. Of course Shreyas was the first name in our list. He was the skipper. That’s why we got him in 2022.”

Mysore shared that Shreyas Iyer wanted to explore his value in the auction market.

“However, there are often things that you don’t control. If a player wants to test his market value, and the auction is the best marketplace to do that, it is always fair to let him to do so. That’s what we at KKR have always believed in, and have backed our players. At a personal level, I share a very good rapport with Shreyas, but it is also true he should have the freedom to decide,” Mysore added.

Delhi Capitals Shows Interest In Shreyas Iyer Ahead Of IPL 2025 Mega Auction

Meanwhile, reports from PTI suggest that Delhi Capitals (DC) have shown interest in re-signing Shreyas Iyer, even promising him a leadership role. Delhi, now under the GMR group for the next two years, sees Iyer as a valuable asset. Iyer, who previously led DC to the IPL final in 2020, may find a new opportunity to lead DC once again if both parties can reach an agreement.
