England defeated Team India despite Varun Chakravarthy’s fighting five-wicket haul in Rajkot. Legendary fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah won another prestigious honour as part of the 2024 ICC Awards, while South African batter David Miller suffered an injury just before the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Tuesday, January 28.
Archer, Overton Clinical With The Ball As England Stuns India
England halted India’s T20I rampage with a win in the third match of the series in Rajkot. Batting first, England hauled 171-9 from 20 overs courtesy of a regal half-century from opening batter Ben Duckett. Liam Livingstone also blasted five sixes in his enterprising 24-ball 43 while Varun Chakravarthy led India’s wicket-taking charge with figures of 5-24.
Indian run-chase never took off as the ‘Men in Blue’ lost Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav all to Jofra Archer, Brydon Carse and Mark Wood respectively within the opening powerplay. Jamie Overton further piled on India’s misery with the key wickets of Washington Sundar and Hardik Pandya as England claimed a huge 26-run win to reduce the five-match series deficit to 1-2.
Varun Chakravarthy Claims Big Record With Exceptional Spell
Indian spinner Varun Chakravarthy picked up five English wickets in the third T20I match in Rajkot, which included the prized-scalps of Jos Buttler, Jamie Smith and Jamie Overton. Finishing with exceptional figures of 5-24 from his four overs, Chakravarthy’s spell marked the second five-wicket haul of his career, and extended his series tally to 10 wickets.
In doing so, the 33-year-old became the first cricketer in history to pick up at least 10 wickets in a single bilateral T20I series between India and England.
Markram Opens Up On Pressure Captaining Sunrisers In SA20, IPL
South African cricketer Aiden Markram opened up on the pressures of captaining the Sunrisers franchise in both, the SA20 and in the IPL. The cricketer is currently leading the Sunrisers Eastern Cape franchise in the ongoing SA20 2025 season, and previously led the Sunrisers Hyderabad team in IPL before Pat Cummins took over as captain in IPL 2024.
While speaking at a virtual meet and greet with Pari Match, he signified the high stakes nature of the two tournaments, and claimed that the “man management” aspect of the team tends to give “more mental stress” to him.
David Miller Suffers Injury Before Champions Trophy 2025
As South Africa continues to struggle with injuries to several of its first-choice fast bowlers just before the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, senior middle-order batter David Miller pulled up his groin while fielding for the Paarl Royals in their recent SA20 2025 game against the Durban’s Super Giants.
While the extend and the exact impact of injury is yet to be determined, Miller walked off the field after the incident, as occurred during the 14th over of the Super Giants innings. The Royals still ended up winning the match by six wickets and one ball to spare while chasing 144 runs, with half-centurion and number three batter Rubin Hermann catalysing the run-chase.
Jasprit Bumrah Wins ICC Cricketer Of The Year 2024
Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah won the ICC Cricketer of the Year award as part of the ICC Awards 2024. Bumrah defeated fellow nominees Travis Head, Joe Root and Harry Brook to bag the prestigious honour, and became only the fifth Indian cricketer in history after the likes of Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Ravichandran Ashwin and Virat Kohli to scale the landmark.
It is worth noting that Bumrah played a significant role during India’s victorious 2024 T20 World Cup campaign in the West Indies and in the USA back in June. Moreover, the speedster also headlined India’s emphatic 4-1 Test series victory over England at home back in March, and picked up 30 wickets in just four matches against Australia to sign off the year in style.
A few days ago, Jasprit Bumrah also won the ICC Test Cricketer of the Year award, and was selected in ICC’s Test Team of the Year alongside Australian captain Pat Cummins.
