Abhigyan Kundu, the 17-year-old Mumbai prodigy, is creating waves in Indian cricket. Today, he starred for India U19 against Malaysia in the U19 Asia Cup in Dubai and smashed the first ever youth ODI double century for India U19. Known for his fearless batting and sharp wicket-keeping, Kundu continues to draw attention as one of the brightest young talents.

From Mumbai maidans to India U19 glory; the journey of Abhigyan Kundu

Abhigyan’s cricketing journey is nothing short of remarkable. He made his India U19 debut at the age of 16 during Australia U19’s tour of India back in 2024. Since then, he has been a regular feature in the team and is now the first-choice wicket-keeper batter for the upcoming U19 World Cup.

Growing up in Mumbai, Abhigyan has played his cricket in the city’s competitive maidans, supported by the Avinash Salvi Foundation from an early age. By the age of 13, he had already entered India’s Book of Records by scoring over 24,000 runs in youth cricket, including more than eighty centuries.

Despite his short stature, his composure, timing, and natural stroke-making ability have made him a standout talent in Mumbai’s cricketing ecosystem. His first major breakthrough on foreign soil came recently in Australia, where he scored an unbeaten 87 off 74 balls, in a successful run-chase.

Fast forward to the U19 Asia Cup 2025, after India U19 got off to a flying start against Malaysia with Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s early onslaught of a 26-ball fifty, it was Abhigyan who stole the spotlight with a mammoth knock, helping India post a formidable total.

Coming in to bat at number 5, Abhigyan Kundu played a magnificent innings of unbeaten 209 runs in just 125 balls,  featuring 17 fours and 9 sixes, instantly making the cricketing world take notice.

The record-breaking Mumbai wonderkid, from the maidans, not only shattered previous India U19 records but also announced himself on the global stage as a talent to watch.

In a team featuring headline-makers like Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Ayush Mhatre, Abhigyan Kundu, with his 209*, now holds India U19’s highest youth ODI score and ranks second on the all-time list, behind Jorich van Schalkwyk's 215 of South Africa U19.
