The Eden Gardens pitch controversy this IPL 2025 season seems to have escalated beyond control. Earlier this month, the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) reportedly wrote to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to request the exclusion of prominent commentators Harsha Bhogle and Simon Doull from commentating in IPL 2025 matches at the Eden Gardens.
Amidst repeated complains regarding the pitch, the CAB is still openly backing curator Sujan Mukherjee, insisting that the stadium officials will continue to follow IPL regulations.
CAB defends Eden Gardens curator
The playing conditions at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata has been facing severe criticism this IPL 2025 season for allegedly not favoring the home team, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Earlier this season, KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane took a subtle dig at the Eden Gardens curator after his team fell to a close defeat against the LSG franchise.
A few days later, expert commentator Harsha Bhogle and Simon Doull criticised curator Sujan Mukherjee for not assisting the home team. As a result, both Bhogle and Doull were removed from the commentary panel from the remaining IPL 2025 matches of the KKR franchise at their home ground.
Amidst much controversy, CAB is still backing Mukherjee for preparing sporting surfaces. Mukherjee himself stated that while he was not aware of the entire fiasco between CAB and the commentators, he said that his primary job is to make sporting wickets in a bid to assist everyone.
Nonetheless, the KKR franchise is currently ranked seventh on the IPL 2025 points table for securing just three wins and sustaining five defeats from eight matches. The NRR of the defending champions also reads a dismal 0.212 at the moment. Ajinkya Rahane and co. will now face Punjab Kings at the Eden Gardens in match 44 of the competition on April 26.
