Rishabh Pant came up with an unusual approach against the Delhi Capitals, his former team, in match 40 of the IPL 2025 season. After getting invited to bat first, the LSG skipper demoted himself down the batting order in favor of Abdul Samad, Ayush Badoni and blistering South African batter David Miller.

Several fans questioned Pant’s surprised self-demotion, at a time when the struggling wicketkeeper-batter desperately needed some runs under his belt.

Rishabh Pant trolled for “hiding” behind Samad, Badoni

Rishabh Pant is undergoing one of the worst phases of his IPL career. Leading the LSG franchise in IPL 2025, the dashing left-hander has managed to accrue just 106 runs in his first seven innings of the tournament at a dismal average of 15.14 and a strike rate of 98.14. Notably, Pant cracked 63 of those runs in a single innings, doing so against the CSK in Lucknow on April 14.

On April 22 during LSG’s home fixture against Delhi Capitals, Rishabh Pant demoted himself down the order, much to everyone’s surprise. While he usually bats at number four, the LSG skipper sent hard-hitting middle-order stars Abdul Samad, David Miller and Ayush Badoni above him.

Pant’s self-demotion prompted a legion of LSG and Indian cricket fans to make hilarious memes at the expense of the struggling wicketkeeper-batter. While some fans compared Rishabh Pant’s demotion to that of CSK legend MS Dhoni this IPL 2025 season, others jokingly claimed that the senior pro was “hiding” his struggles behind Samad, Miller and Badoni.

Rishabh Pant eventually made his arrival into the crease, albeit as a number seven batter. The cricketer made his way following the dismissal of a well-set Ayush Badoni, at a time when the LSG innings was just a couple of deliveries from closure.

As it turned out, the belligerent left-hander got cleaned up by Delhi Capitals paceman Mukesh Kumar to make his way back to the dugout for a two-ball duck, as the LSG finished its innings at 159-6 from 20 overs.
