The World Test Champions 2025-27 cycle is likely to undergo major format reforms. According to Telegraph, bonus points will be introduced for the upcoming cycle for teams who win a game in away conditions, or wins by an innings or beat a higher ranked team.
WTC 2025 finalists have been decided with South Africa scheduled to take on defending champions Australia at Lord’s Cricket Ground from June 16. Once we have the winner, a new cycle will kick off, starting from 2025 to 2027.
The five-game Test series between India and England will be the first series played under the new cycle and according to media reports, ICC is considering some reforms for the new cycle.
WTC New Cycle To Have Bonus Points: Reports
The World Test Championship (WTC) may see important alterations before June 2025, when the next cycle comes around, including talks of using in-game bonus points and points for away wins.
Currently, all wins in the WTC carry equal weight, regardless of the margin of victory. But the ICC has under consideration the introduction of a bonus points system, giving teams reward for colossal victories, including by an innings. This modification will keep matches interesting even when the result is certain.
Another significant proposal is to give bonus points for away victories, encouraging teams to prepare better for overseas tours. Also under consideration is a seeding system, in which wins over stronger teams would be given more value.
While the proposed points system aims to make the competition fairer, concerns remain about its complexity and how it would affect the championship’s standings. Moreover, India and Pakistan’s continued lack of bilateral Test matches remains a challenge for maintaining fairness in the WTC.
India Out, South Africa Tops WTC 2025 Points Table
Australia, after a 2-0 series victory over Sri Lanka, has qualified for the finals of the WTC 2025. Despite this dominant performance against Sri Lanka and India, Australia finished second in the final WTC standings, securing a place in the final alongside table-toppers South Africa.
South Africa topped the table with a PCT of 69.44, while Australia followed closely with 67.54 PCT. Meanwhile, India finished third with a PCT of 50.00 after struggling in their recent Test series.
