In a bizarre and rare incident, Pakistan's star batter Saud Shakeel was dismissed timed out while representing State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) against Pakistan Television (PTV) in the President’s Cup Grade 1 First-Class tournament.
Saud Shakeel Faces 'Time-Out' Dismissal
Saud Shakeel, who was set to bat at No. 5, failed to make it to the crease within the required three minutes after consecutive wickets fell. The PTV side, led by captain Amad Butt, promptly appealed, and the umpires ruled him out. As per reports, Shakeel reportedly dozed off and missed his chance to bat in time.
The incident unfolded when SBP, batting first at 128-1, suddenly found themselves in trouble after Mohammad Shahzad dismissed skipper Umar Amin and Fawad Alam off consecutive deliveries. Shakeel, the next batter, delayed his arrival beyond the allowed time, and PTV seized the moment with a successful appeal.
To add to SBP’s misery, Shahzad bowled Mohammad Irfan on the next ball, completing a stunning hat-trick and triggering a collapse that saw SBP fold for 205.
Shakeel now joins an exclusive and unwanted list of only seven cricketers in first-class history to be dismissed 'timed out' since the rule was introduced.
What Is A 'Timed Out' Dismissal In Cricket?
A 'timed out' dismissal in cricket happens when a new batsman does not arrive at the crease within three minutes of the previous batsman's dismissal. If the incoming batsman is not ready to take his position at the crease or at his partner's end within that time frame, the fielding side has the right to appeal for a 'timed out' dismissal.
If the appeal is successful, the batsman is declared out. This method of dismissal is one of the ten recognized in the laws of cricket, but it is quite rare in professional matches.
