In a significant development, legendary Pakistan cricketer Bismah Maroof has stepped down from captaincy. However, she will continue representing Pakistan Women purely as a player.

On Wednesday night, PCB Chairman Mr Najam Sethi admitted to accepting Maroof's resignation via a tweet.

He also revealed that the veteran has taken the decision in order to ensure a smooth transition for the side.

Here's what the tweet read

"I have accepted resignation of Bismah Maroof, Captain of Pakistan Women’s National Team. She wants to make way for a younger colleague. But happily she will continue to play for Pakistan and bring laurels for her country."

Maroof, who took the leadership baton from Sana Mir, has captained Pakistan Women in 62 T20Is and 34 One-Day Internationals. She has had modest success as a skipper, leading her troops to 27 T20I and 16 ODI victories.

However, the stylish southpaw has been a mainstay for Pakistan Women since debuting in 2006. In 124 ODI matches, she has 3110 runs to her name at a decent average of 30.19.

Meanwhile, the 31-year-old is the highest-scorer for Pakistan in Women's T20Is, garnering 2658 runs, including twelve fifties.

Furthermore, Maroof has proved her mettle with the ball, scalping 80 wickets across formats. Recently, she had an ordinary outing as skipper, as the Women in Green finished fourth in the group stage points table of the recently concluded T20 World Cup with three defeats in four games.
