June 3, 2025 was an eventful evening for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) as the franchise captured their maiden IPL title in 18 years. There was jubilation all around as fans expected the franchise to conduct open bus parade the next day to celebrate the historic event.

However, June 4, Wednesday turned out to be a dark day for the franchise and for the entire India as a stampede like situation took place outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, which killed at-least 11 people and injured 50. 

There was a total mis-happening on the part of the State Government as what was supposed to be a joyful event turned out to be a dark day for everyone present in Bengaluru. Here is an entire timeline of how things went wrong at the event.

Historic win on June 3

  • In the finale Vs Punjab Kings, the RCB side kept their calm and won the finale by 6 runs as the team etched their name in the history books. The entire Narendra Modi Stadium turned Red, honouring the newly crowned champions.

RCB Team arrives in Bengaluru and get felicitated

  • The next day on June 4, the RCB side arrived in Bengaluru as the entire streets of the city were filled with RCB supporters. Almost all the roads were jammed as every single person wanted to get glimpses of their title winning heroes.
  • By the time Virat Kohli and his team arrived at the airport, the crowd had started to gather at the Chinnaswamy Stadium and Vidhana Soudha. At around 2:10 PM, the team reached the airport and were greeted by deputy CM D K Shivakumar.
  • At around 3:14 PM, RCB urged the fans to get free victory passes online and this created a wave of panic as people rushed towards the stadium.

The chaos which led to numerous deaths

  • At around 4:30 PM, the situation became out of control as more than 3 lakh fans rushed towards the stadium to attend the players' felicitation. The metro services at Vidhana Soudha and Cubbon Park was suspended due to overcrowding.
  • 20 minutes later, by 4:50 PM, the situation went out of everyone's control as stampede broke out near gate 7 of the stadium. It turned out to be a death-trap as social media buzz suggested that free passes were given for the event.
  • The stadium has a capacity of 35,000, however, with lakhs of people coming in, there was nothing which the Police could do as fans broke the barricades and scrambled in which resulted in many innocent lives getting crushed.

Aftermath of the event: Mourning by players

  • Fans on social media targeted the RCB team and their management for conducting the event. Police officials urged the team not to host the event but they ignored the advice.
  • After the outrage, RCB mourned on social media as they condemned the incident. The likes of Virat Kohli, Anushka Sharma and even Krunal Pandya looked dejected on social media.
  • There was a hearing in the High Court of Karnataka regarding the event at 2:30 PM. Moreover, as per reports, RCB is set to be given Legal Notice for the massacre.

RCB's great gesture

  • RCB announced annual financial support of 10 lakh to each of the 11 families of the deceased.
  • In addition, a fund called RCB Cares is also being created to support fans injured in this tragic incident.

Karnataka Home Minister Opines

The Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara inspected the site of the stampede at the Chinnaswamy stadium and stated his version of the saddening incident: 

"We did not request RCB or the KCA, they organised it (the victory celebration). They are the ones who brought the team to Bengaluru. The government also felt it should facilitate this, as it was the Bengaluru team. I feel very sorry that this incident happened."Speaking to the media, Parameshwara said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the stampede in Bengaluru as "absolutely heartrending".

Will Cooperate With Government: RCB On FIR 

RCB came under legal scrutiny after an FIR was filed against the franchise in relation to a stampede that occurred outside Chinnaswamy Stadium. The FIR names: RCB, KSCA, DNA Entertainment Networks. 

In response, RCB has stated it will fully cooperate with all legal proceedings related to the incident. 

"We can't comment on legal proceedings at the moment. But we will co-operate with all the government and judicial authorities". 

Kapil Dev On Bengaluru Stampede

The tragic incident during the RCB IPL victory celebrations has deeply saddened many, including cricketing legend Kapil Dev. His reaction, expressing sorrow over the death of fans.

"I feel very bad about that. I think we have to learn from each other. Next time something like this (victory parade) happens, people should be more conscious. People do make a mistake," Kapil told PTI on the sidelines of a corporate event organised by the Arche Global Private Limited.

Bengaluru Police Arrests RCB's Head Of Marketing and Revenue

Following the FIR filed on Thursday, the Bengaluru police arrested RCB's head of marketing and revenue, Nikhil Sosale, from the Kempegowda International Airport. The cops also detained the employees of DNA Entertainment Network, Kiran Kumar (Senior Event Manager) and Sunil Mathew (Vice President - Business Affairs).
