England’s Test captain Ben Stokes will likely join the MI Cape Town franchise for the third season of the SA20 next year. As per reports, the 33-year-old has been offered a lucrative amount by the franchise, even though the all-rounder has been distancing himself from white-ball cricket off late.

Ben Stokes recently skipped the IPL 2024 season and the 2024 T20 World Cup in a bid to prioritize bowling in Test matches for England. Back in late-2023, the all-rounder also made a hasty return to England’s ODI setup for the World Cup in India.

As of now, the World Cup match he played against Pakistan in November 2023 at the Eden Gardens remains his last white-ball outing for any team.

The MI Cape Town franchise has offered Ben Stokes a staggering sum of £800,000 (Rs.8.6 crore) to compete in the 2025 edition of the SA20 league. The SA20 2025 is scheduled to kick-off on January 9 and the tournament will conclude on February 8. If Stokes accepts the deal, the cricketer will end up missing England’s five-match T20I series in India scheduled around the same time period.

Ben Stokes’ all-round skills and marketability makes him a huge drawcard in the world of franchise cricket. Apart from starring in his nation’s 2019 World Cup and 2022 T20 World Cup wins, Stokes was also adjudged as the ‘Most Valuable Player’ of the IPL 2017 season.

However, the all-rounder has been on a self-imposed sabbatical from white-ball cricket off late in a bid to prioritize Test matches for England. Stokes opted himself out of the IPL 2024 season in India and the 2024 T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies

He also announced his retirement from ODIs in mid-2022, and only returned to England’s 50-overs setup for the 2023 World Cup at the behest of captain Jos Buttler and the team management.

As of now, Ben Stokes is leading the English cricket team in a three-match Test series against the West Indies.
