The IND vs SA 1st Test at Eden Gardens saw India captain Shubman Gill walk off the field on Day 2 of the match when India came in to bat in their first innings. However, after a short while, as Gill walked in after the dismissal of Washington Sundar, Gill was waved off the field after he suffered a neck cramp while playing a sweep shot off Simon Harmer.

On Sunday morning, BCCI officially released a notification on their official social media handle to declare that Gill has been ruled out of the 1st Test and will be kept under medical observation.

Gill's neck injury to be monitored by medical team

Shubman Gill suffered the injury after playing just 3 balls and scoring 4 runs off a single boundary. As he walked off, Rishabh Pant, the deputy of the Indian Test team, became the stand-in skipper to manage the rest of the proceedings.

Shubman Gill was visibly in pain while he walked out of the field, and the severity of the neck cramp is to be monitored as per the official statement by the BCCI.

"Captain Shubman Gill had a neck injury on Day 2 of the ongoing Test against South Africa in Kolkata. He was taken to the hospital for examination after the end of the day's play. He is currently under observation in the hospital. He will take no further part in the Test match. He will continue to be monitored by the BCCI medical team," BCCI statement read.

This leaves India with a 6-day window for Gill to recover if they want their captain to come back at the helm before the second Test on November 22.

Nevertheless, as of the match, Day 3 is on the horizon, and India is totally in control. South Africa piled up 159 on Day 1, and as India’s bowlers wrapped them up inside teh first day itself, the Men in Blue couldn't do much but only add 189 runs on board to get a skimpy lead. India was bowled out within the first couple of sessions on Day 2, with KL Rahul top-scoring with 39.

Currently, South Africa are at the crease as Day 3 is about to begin, with Corbin Bosch and Temba Bavuma facing the Indian bowling attack while they lead by 63 runs.
