The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) experienced a substantial financial boost from the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2023. 

According to BCCI's annual report for 2022-23, the total revenue generated from IPL 2023 reached an impressive ₹11,769 crore. This marked 78% year-on-year growth. 

The board earned a surplus of ₹5,120 crore, which represented a significant 116% increase compared to the previous year. This boost in earnings is largely attributed to the new media rights and sponsorship deals.


How Much Did BCCI Earn For IPL 2023 From Media Rights?

According to the reports of the Economic Times, the media rights for the 2023-27 cycle, which started with IPL 2023, were a major contributor to this growth. 

The rights were sold for a staggering ₹48,390 crore, in which Disney Star acquired the television rights for ₹23,575 crore and Viacom18 network's JioCinema secured the digital rights for ₹23,758 crore. 

Consequently, BCCI's media rights revenue for IPL 2023 soared to ₹8,744 crore, up from ₹3,780 crore in the previous season.

 While the income surged, BCCI's expenditure also rose by 66% to ₹6,648 crore. Despite the increase in costs, the overall financial results reflect the continued growth and profitability of the IPL under the new media and sponsorship arrangements.

How Much Did BCCI Earn For WPL 2023?

The BCCI reported a surplus of 377 crore from the inaugural season of the Women's Premier League (WPL) in 2023. 

This surplus was generated through a combination of media rights, franchise fees, and sponsorships, which amount to a total of 636 crore. The expenditure incurred for the WPL amounted to 259 crore. 

Additionally, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary disclosed to the Rajya Sabha that the BCCI had contributed 2,038 crore in Goods and Services Tax (GST) during the financial years 2023 and 2024.
