BCCI likely to part ways with bio-bubbles during South Africa T20Is

New updates have come to the forefront for the South Africa versus India T20I series scheduled for June 9 to 19, 2022.

The Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) has stated that it is likely that they will discard the bio-bubble mandates for players during the South Africa Series. The five-match T20I series schedule was announced earlier this week.

The bio-bubbles have become a part of a sportsperson's life since the onset of the global pandemic. Players have been confined in their hotels under strict bubble rules for more than two years now, but the board understands that such a set-up is taking a significant toll on the players' mental health in the longer run.

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has also expressed that the players need a break from confinement in order to salvage their form and performance.

The ongoing IPL, culminating on May 29, is also being played under a strict bio-bubble. Post the IPL, the Indian team will take on South Africa in a 5-match T20I series before embarking on a three week trip to the United Kingdom.

According to a report published in PTI, a source close to the BCCI has claimed that the players will no longer have to stay within the confines of the bubble during the South African series, which will start in Delhi from June 9.

"If all goes well and things remain in control like it is right now, there will be no bio-bubbles and hard quarantine during the home series against South Africa."

This development could be a grim notification for the players and the team management. Following the year's calendar, an Ireland and England tour is scheduled for the Indian team before the Men in Blue head for the Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup.

BCCI stated that the possibility of bio bubbles for the same is rare since the UK currently has no restrictions/bio bubble mandates for sporting activities. However, the players will be tested at regular intervals as a precautionary measure.

The official further stated that players would be given timely rest in the forthcoming months, given the hectic schedule and the rigours of playing in the bubble.

"Some players have got periodic breaks, but if you look at the bigger picture, living in bio-bubble one series after another and now two months of IPL is simply exhausting for the players," he said.

BCCI official stated that some players might get total rest while others play a few games. Selectors and head coach Rahul Dravid will decide upon the duration of the breaks.

The 5 T20Is will take place in Delhi, Cuttack, Vizag, Rajkot and Bengaluru between June 09-19.
