In a significant development, the BCCI has reportedly introduced a new substitution rule for the upcoming domestic season following Rishabh Pant's nasty injury in the Manchester Test during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
According to a report from Cricbuzz, the apex board of India will allow substitutions for serious injuries sustained during the upcoming red-ball tournament in domestic cricket. However, the rule will not be applied to white-ball events like the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy.
BCCI Introduces Major Rule Change
"If a player sustains a serious injury during the course of the relevant match, a Serious Injury Replacement may be permitted in the following circumstances. The serious injury must have been sustained during play and within the playing area described in clause," read the Cricbuzz report.
Notably, The BCCI has granted the power to the umpires to decide the seriousness of the injury and then make the call whether a team should be allowed a substitution or not.
Rishabh Pant's Injury Inspired BCCI's Move
Notably, in the fourth Test between India and England, Rishabh Pant was hit on the toe, following which he was taken off the field on a cart and the scans confirmed a fracture. The Indian team were without a man for the rest of the match and Rishabh also walked to bat despite pain.
It sparked a debate, where the cricketers and pundits were divided over introducing substitution rule. Notably, Gautam Gambhir was open to welcome a new change, while Ben Stokes was not happy with the suggestion, despite Chris Woakes suffering a similar kind of injury in the fifth and final Test.
Having said that, the BCCI has introduced this rule in domestic structure and it is to be seen whether the ICC will get inspired by this or not.
