The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reported a revenue of Rs 377.49 crores generated from the inaugural season of the Women's Premier League (WPL 2023), held in Mumbai from March 4 to March 26, 2023. BCCI's treasurer, Ashish Shelar, confirmed this development on Monday, September 25.

According to Shelar's report presented at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the BCCI in Goa, the Board's total income for the financial year 2022-23 reached Rs 6,558.80 crores, marking a significant increase compared to the Rs 4,360.57 crores generated in the financial year 2021-22.

Shelar's report for the 2022-23 financial year highlighted that the BCCI's revenue from the WPL, featuring five teams, amounted to Rs 377.49 crores. An income breakdown within the report revealed that the surplus from the WPL accounted for 6% of the BCCI's total income for that financial year.

A major share, 37%, of the BCCI's income during this period came from the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Additionally, the Board earned 38% of its income from the sale of media rights and 10% from men's senior international tours.

Shelar acknowledged the challenges faced during the COVID-19 pandemic, which impacted the cricketing season in 2020-21 but remained optimistic about the resumption of domestic cricket in subsequent seasons.

"This is to bring to your notice that due to Covid 19, the cricketing season in 20-21 was cut down to only three tournaments. The domestic season of 2022-22 was at full strength except a few junior tournaments, like Under 16, etc. However, the year 2022-23 brought back all the hopes and confidence to conduct the entire domestic season with enthusiasm. The baton handed over to me by my predecessors in a very healthy financial position, and I will make sure that it grows stronger as time passes... The BCCI has proved to the sports world how standards can be maintained in all situations,"  Ashish Shelar informed the members of the state associations.

In light of the resounding success of the first season, the BCCI is contemplating expanding the Women's Premier League for its second season.

A reliable source within the BCCI confirmed that the next edition of the WPL will adopt a home-away format with an extended schedule in the upcoming edition.

The board's intention is to create a gap between the IPL and WPL to ensure a smoother transition between the two tournaments.
