Rohit Sharma in Action for India - (Source :@Johns/X.com)
India are set to start a new chapter in their cricketing history from June 20 when captain Shubman Gill and Co take on England for a five-match Test series. The Punjab-based cricketer was recently named Rohit Sharma's successor, who, out of the blue, announced his Test retirement on May 7.
Now Rohit is only active in ODIs and is eyeing to feature in the 2027 ODI World Cup as he also announced T20I retirement in June 2024. The Hitman, who is 38, now faces the challenge of being fit in time for the next ODI World Cup as he will be 40 by that time.
In the latest events, a report from Hindustan Times mentioned that the BCCI had expected Rohit Sharma to bid adieu from ODI cricket after Champions Trophy 2025.
"Quite frankly, a lot of us thought Rohit wanted to move away from the ODI format after winning the Champions Trophy. There have been no discussions between Rohit and the selectors over his ODI future," a BCCI source told The Hindustan Times.
Rohit Sharma had a great 2023 World Cup, where he changed his approach and it did wonders for the 38-year-old. However, India fell short in the final, which is when the Hitman decided to stay fit and in contention for the upcoming ODI World Cup.
India's Schedule Till 2027 ODI World Cup
In the last two years, India are set to play 27 ODIs and it is unclear how many games will Rohit star in. The next time Sharma will be in action would be against Bangladesh when India play three ODIs.
Even in Champions Trophy, Rohit scored 180 runs in five innings, averaging 36. Thus, for the 38-year-old to play 2027 ODI World Cup, he needs to continue the same run.
Also, for the unversed, there are reports that Cricket Australia are planning to give a farewell to Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who will be travelling Down Under for an ODI series later this year, which could also be their last in Australia.
