Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were expected to play for India in Test matches on their England tour. But surprisingly, both decided to quit Test cricket even before the series started. Since they already retired from T20 internationals last year, the only format left for them to play for India is One Day Internationals (ODIs).
After retiring from Tests and T20Is, Kohli and Rohit are likely to play in August for India’s three-match ODI series against Bangladesh. Later, in October, they will tour Australia for another three-match ODI series.
Cricket Australia CEO Hints At Farewell Event
Many believe Kohli and Rohit could retire from international cricket after the 2027 ODI World Cup. If that happens, this Australia tour would be a fitting goodbye.
As per a Hindustan Times report, Cricket Australia’s CEO Todd Greenberg said they are planning a special farewell for both players during the October tour.
"This might be the last time that we get to see Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma play in our country. And if that is the case, who knows, it might not be, but if it is, we wanna make sure we give them a great send-off and a reflection of the incredible contribution they've made to international cricket," Todd Greenberg said.
While Kohli and Rohit are expected to play against Bangladesh, there’s still some uncertainty about their participation. Both have said they want to continue until the 2027 ODI World Cup. Rohit recently mentioned in an interview that he wants to keep playing till then, and Kohli, who has an impressive average of 57.9 in ODIs, is expected to do the same.
By the time of the 2027 World Cup, Rohit will be 40 years old and Kohli 38, so staying fit and in good form will be challenging.
Neither player has officially announced their retirement yet, so they might keep playing. But the plans for a farewell tour in Australia seem quite real.
