On Wednesday, January 22, India locked horns against England in the 1st T20I of the five-match T20I series. The hosts registered a thumping seven-wicket win as they chased down a small target of 133 runs in just 12.5 overs.

Abhishek Sharma was the star with the bat as he played a brilliant knock of 79 (34), which featured eight sixes. However, Varun Chakaravarthy set the tone with the ball as he spun his magic at the Eden Gardens. Notably, the right-arm spinner registered a three-wicket haul and was the pick of the bowlers.

While English batters were having difficulty reading Varun, the Indian fans were disheartened that Chakaravarthy failed to get a place in the Champions Trophy squad.

Thus, this article will shed light on three reasons why Leaving Chakaravarthy is a big blunder.

1. Brilliant Form

Varun has made a remarkable return to the Indian team under Gautam Gambhir's tenure. Notably, in the past year, the right-arm spinner has been brilliant with the ball. While Kuldeep Yadav missed most of the action because of injury, Varun took a fifer vs South Africa, rattled The Tigers in the T20I series and also ended the 2024-25 Vijay Hazare Trophy as the joint-leading wicket-taker.

Not just T20Is, but Varun has been effective in white-ball cricket which is a major plus and a justified reason to have a player of his quality in the squad for the Champions Trophy, where spinners can play a key role on Dubai pitches.

2. Full Of Variations

One major difference between Varun and Kuldeep is the usage of variations. While both bowlers can boast the title of 'mystery spinners', Kuldeep relies on leg spin and troubling the batters with a few wrong ones on occasions.

However, Varun continuously keeps the batter guessing by mixing his deliveries. In an over of six deliveries, he intends to bowl three within the batter and three away from him, which has made him successful lately.

3. Match Readiness

While India have gone ahead with Kuldeep for the Champions Trophy, it is by no means a bad choice. However, an injury threat looms over the DC star as he is yet to prove his match fitness and will return directly for the Champions Trophy.

Yadav underwent a surgery for a groin injury and recently hit the nets for the first time since his operation.
