Bangladesh has created history in its cricketing journey by taking a landmark step towards empowering women in the sport. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has officially appointed Salma Khatun, former national women’s team captain, as the country’s first-ever woman selector.
Salma Khatun To Pioneer Historic Move
This significant decision marks a new era for Bangladesh cricket, highlighting inclusivity and representation at the decision-making level.
Salma Khatun, widely regarded as one of the pioneers of women’s cricket in Bangladesh, will join Sazzad Ahmed on the women’s selection panel. Her inclusion is expected to bring fresh perspectives to the selection process, particularly with her years of experience as a player and captain.
Having represented Bangladesh with distinction across formats, Salma’s insight into the game will play a key role in shaping the next generation of women cricketers.
BCB Official Applauds The Move
Iftikhar Rehman, the chairman of BCB’s media committee, praised the move and called it a “revolutionary decision” for Bangladesh cricket.
"I think this is a revolutionary decision by our (BCB) president (Aminul Islam), as having someone like Salma involved will provide great support for women's cricket. This is the first time such an appointment has been made in Bangladesh," Iftekhar said.
Salma's Contribution To Cricket
The appointment is also seen as recognition of Salma Khatun’s immense contributions to Bangladesh cricket. Salma Khatun was Bangladesh’s first captain in international women’s cricket, leading the side in 65 T20Is and 18 ODIs. Over her career, she featured in 95 T20Is and 46 ODIs, establishing herself as one of the country’s most influential cricketers.
Among her many accolades, Salma reached the pinnacle of the ICC rankings, becoming the world’s No. 1 T20I bowler in both 2014 and 2015. She claimed 84 wickets in the format at an impressive average of 18.57, with her best figures of 4 for 6 coming against Sri Lanka.
