A hard-fought battle between the Cricketers' Welfare Association of Bangladesh and the Bangladesh Cricket Board found its conclusion on Thursday afternoon after the board accepted the players' demand and expelled Najmul Islam, Chairman of the Finance Committee, due to his recent stance regarding the team's participation in the T20 World Cup 2026.

Keeping the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League's future in mind, the decision was taken just hours after the CWAB issued their final ultimatum to the board, asking for a written confirmation of Islam's resignation within 48 hours. The BPL is now expected to resume from match 26 between Rajshahi Warriors and Sylhet Titans.

BCB bows in front of players amid BPL boycott

BCB president, Mohammad Aminul Islam, who previously issued a show-cause notice to Islam for his comment about the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka and his comments on Tamim Iqbal, conveyed this sacking decision through an official press release, mentioning Article 31 of the BCB constitution to ensure smooth and effective functioning of the Board's affairs.

"The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) wishes to inform that, following a review of recent developments and in the best interest of the organisation, the BCB President has decided to release Mr Najmul Islam from his responsibilities as Chairman of the Finance Committee with immediate effect," read the press release.

Until a new board member assumes the responsibility as the Chair of the Finance Committee, Mohammad Aminul Islam will himself take charge as the acting chairman.

BCB keeps player interest at priority

The same release through BCB's media department also reiterated the board's intentions to keep the player welfare and interest as the most important thing to them and stated their committment in upholding the honour and dignity of all players.

Heading forward, they have asked for players to return to the field for the remainder of the BPL season and expect them to display professionalism and dedication towards the betterment of Bangladesh Cricket.

Bangladesh's T20 World Cup stance

As things stand, after the removal of Najmul Islam, the BCB could be seen finding a peaceful and diplomatic resolution of the matter with ICC and BCCI after their request to shift the matches to Sri Lanka was reportedly rejected.

The players are currently keen on participating in the tournament as scheduled, considering the finances involved in it and it is highly likely that the team will now travel to India as planned originally and play all their group stage games against West Indies, Italy, England and Nepal. It was reported that the games in Kolkata could be shifted to Southern India; however, any confirmation regarding this is awaited from ICC's end.
