BCB issues show cause notice to Nazmul Islam [Source: AFP]
In a major development in Bangladesh cricket, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has issued a show-cause notice to its director, M Nazmul Islam. This action came after Nazmul made public comments that many cricketers found offensive and disrespectful.
Notably, his remarks quickly caused anger among players and led to serious unrest within the cricket community.
As a result, the Cricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) announced a boycott of all forms of cricket unless Nazmul stepped down from his position.
BCB takes disciplinary action
Following growing pressure, the BCB officially confirmed that it had started disciplinary proceedings against Nazmul Islam. According to the board, a show-cause letter was sent to him, asking for a written explanation within 48 hours.
"The board has already initiated formal disciplinary proceedings against the board member concerned," the BCB statement read.
"A show cause letter has been issued, and the individual has been instructed to submit a written response within 48 hours. The matter will be dealt with through due process and appropriate action will be taken based on the outcome of the proceedings."
CWAB strongly opposes Nazmul’s comments
The controversy became more serious after Nazmul commented on the uncertainty surrounding Bangladesh’s participation in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. He suggested that only players would suffer financially if Bangladesh did not take part in the tournament and that the board would not compensate them for any losses.
CWAB strongly objected to these statements, saying they showed a lack of respect and concern for players’ livelihoods. Therefore, CWAB issued a clear ultimatum, demanding Nazmul’s resignation.
Meanwhile, the impact of the boycott became visible very quickly. Four first-division matches of the Dhaka Cricket League scheduled for Thursday morning did not begin on time. This raised serious concerns within the BCB.
In addition, reports confirmed that players from Chattogram Royals and Noakhali Express, who were set to play the first BPL match of the day, also decided to stick to the boycott. Even an hour before the match was due to start, players had not arrived at the stadium.
BCB’s attempt to rase the situation
In an effort to calm the situation, some BCB directors reportedly contacted CWAB president Mohammad Mithun late Wednesday night. They offered to remove Nazmul Islam from his role as chairman of the finance committee.
However, Mithun made it clear that this step was not enough. According to him, the players’ decision to boycott remained unchanged unless Nazmul resigned completely.
As the situation stood, uncertainty continued to surround the scheduled BPL match at Mirpur. CWAB leaders planned to hold a press conference once the match start time passed.
During the briefing, they were expected to clearly present their demands to the BCB, including Nazmul Islam’s resignation. With CWAB standing firm, it appeared that players were fully prepared to continue their boycott, even if it disrupted major tournaments.
