Prolific Pakistan batter Babar Azam has captivated fans the world over through his batting artistry at the crease. His seamless grace with some exquisite stroke-making has earned him a place among the game’s elite, and surely among some of the greatest of Pakistan cricket.

Apart from gathering huge numbers with the bat across all playing conditions, Babar Azam also proudly wears a number on his jersey that holds a small significance of its own. Here at OneCricket, we take a look at the brief origin story of Babar Azam’s jersey number and also the profound significance it now holds for the legendary batter.

Babar Azam jersey number and its significance

Back in late-2021 during the T20 World Cup in UAE, Babar Azam said that he was offered jersey number ‘33’ quite earlier in his career. He further revealed that he was later offered to choose between the numbers ‘33’ and ‘56’, upon which he ended up choosing the latter.

Babar Azam admitted that while the number ‘56’ did not held any meaning to him at first, it now holds a profound significance in his cricketing journey. The legendary Pakistan batter even added that he is planning to launch a brand centered around the number ‘56’.

Interestingly, Indian batting legend Virat Kohli has even launched a line of restaurants named ‘One8 Commune’ centered around his national jersey number 18.

Babar Azam, meanwhile, is one of the most proficient batters Pakistan has ever produced. The 29-year-old cricketer is currently the second-highest run-maker in T20Is, and the highest among all active players with an overall tally of 4,145 runs from 116 innings. Overall, the legendary right-hander has amassed nearly 14,000 international runs with 31 centuries and 94 additional scores of fifty or more.

Babar Azam is currently gearing up to face England in a crucial three-match Test series at home in October this year.
