Amid a series of failures, there have been growing speculations about Babar Azam's future as Pakistan's white-ball captain, with reports now suggesting that he might be sacked from the role by PCB. Pakistan were shockingly knocked out of the 2023 ODI World Cup group stages, following which captain Babar Azam took responsibility for the setback and tendered his resignation from the role across all formats.
However, after his successor Shaheen Afridi also failed to show results, Babar was reinstated as Pakistan's white-ball captain ahead of the T20 World Cup. But Pakistan's fate throughout this shake-up stayed the same as the men in green failed to advance in the tournament.
Babar Azam's captaincy under serious threat
That being said, Babar Azam's failures as a specialist batter have seen no bounds lately. He barely scored over 60 runs across two home Tests against Bangladesh, and Pakistan's 2-0 defeat further rubbed salt on Babar's wounds.
Hence, Pakistan cricket has dropped to a new low, with GEO TV reporting that PCB will likely sack Babar as the white-ball captain soon. His place as a specialist batter is also under the scanner due to underwhelming performances in the recent past.
IN 2024, Babar Azam managed to score only 773 runs across all formats at an average of 33.60. His highest score was 75 across 24 innings.
Babar Azam drops out of the Top 10 Test rankings
Meanwhile, after a shambolic performance with the bat in the recently concluded Bangladesh series, Babar Azam has lost his place in the top 10 ICC Test batter's rankings. He lost three places and dropped down to 12th position with a 712 rating.
This comes after he scored only 64 runs against Bangladesh in the two-game Test series, including a duck. Notably, Babar hasn't scored a fifty in red-ball cricket since 2022.
