June 29th will be etched in the hearts of all Indian cricket fans as on that day, India defeated South Africa in the final of the T20 World Cup 2024 and won the title after 15 long years. The final turned out to be worthy of the occasion as the spectators witnessed an edge of the sit thriller between the two best teams in the tournament.

The final came down to a battle of the nerves of the two teams, where Rohit Sharma and his men successfully passed the test. While most of the players on the team made effective contributions throughout the tournament, Axar Patel played a crucial role in the grand finale.

Axar Patel's crucial knock in the final of T20 World Cup 2024

The Indian all-rounder went out to bat when the team was in trouble at 34/3 in 4.3 overs and played a gutsy knock of 47 from 31 deliveries to bail India out of trouble. Axar's partnership of 72 runs with Virat Kohli proved to be one of the major game-changing moments in the match.

Looking back, one would think of this move as a tactical masterstroke. In a recent discussion with Cricbuzz, Axar Patel revealed the real mastermind behind the move.

"Rohit (Sharma) bhai was standing beside me when Rishabh (Pant) got out. He told me, "Axar pads pehen le". After that (Yuzvendra), Chahal came running to tell me that Rahul (Dravid) Bhai wanted me to pad up. When I was padding up, I did not know what to do.  Things happened so suddenly that I did not have time to think.

"I spoke to Virat Bhai, and he kept guiding me. He said, "I'm there. If you think that you can hit, then go for it". The constant communication was helpful. The rest is history.' - Axar Patel was heard saying.

Notably, Axar Patel did not have a great time with the ball in that game. He conceded 49 runs off his four overs, picking up a wicket. Axar leaked 22 runs off the 15th over, which nearly cost India the game.

However, it was the sheer brilliance of Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya that brought India back into the game, and they found a way to lay their hands on the coveted trophy after 17 years.
